Troop Activities

Troop 255 participates in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities throughout the year. Some of these activities occur on a regular schedule, such as weekly Troop meetings, and others are planned only once a year. Below is a list of some of the activities the Troop participates in.

WEEKLY MEETINGS - Troop 255 meets every Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Windermere Presbyterian Church. The Troop does not meet during the summer months when schools are typically on summer break. Activities conducted during the weekly meetings include working on skills needed to advance in rank, planning for camping trips, and provide time needed to complete merit badge requirements.

CAMPING - Troop 255 usually camps at least once a month. The Troop camps everywhere from local State and County Parks to as far west as the Uwharrie National Forest, located just south of Asheboro, NC. Camping may include relativity easy camping (when we rely on the Troop trailer to haul everything for us), canoe or kayak trips, or hiking/backpacking trips where everything is packed in and out of the campsite.

SUMMER CAMP - The Troop typically attends a week long summer camp at Raven Knob Scout Reservation located west of Mt. Airy, NC. Summer Camp gives the scouts an opportunity to earn merit badges, interact with scouts from across the state, and explore and enjoy the mountains of western North Carolina. Although this camp is a considerable distance away, the scouts have consistently decided on this camp year after year.

MERIT BADGES - There are over 100 merit badges that a scout may earn during his scouting career. Some merit badges are required if the scout wishes to earn the more advanced ranks. Other merit badges may be earned in areas that interest the scout, or in areas the scout may think he has an interest. Although some merit badges may be worked on by the Troop as a unit, most merit badge work is done by the scout as an individual. Time may be used during the weekly meetings or camping trips to "demonstrate" certain skills required for a badge, or to give any presentations that may be required.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - The Troop also participates in community service activities throughout the year. Activities may include the cleanup of trails, tree planting, campsite construction, "Beach Sweeps", or anything else that can be thought of that may contribute to the community.
